STORIES FROM THE FRONT LINE OF OPPORTUNITY
We’re living in a world of statistics today. Everywhere we turn, numbers and data analyze our lives.
Well, statistics measure the need for and the impact of RESTORE HOPE: LIBERIA.
But stats don’t paint the full picture.
Here you will hear from people in Kolahun - letters and the real stories from those that
RESTORE HOPE: LIBERIA has touched.
Taria, Age 7
Taria has endured much during her young life. At age 2, she had major surgery on an international hospital ship to repair a large abdominal protrusion. Five years later, she is healthy but timid and not yet in school. Her mother points out three obstacles to Taria's education: there is no school in their village, Taria is reluctant to leave her mother to attend school in another village, and the family couldn't afford the school fees even if an appropriate school were identified.
But thanks to help researching school options and paying her school fees, RESTORE HOPE: LIBERIA plans to enroll Taria in school at the start of the next term.
Stephen, Age 11
Stephen was diagnosed with diabetes at age 7. Four years after his diagnosis, he lay critically ill and in a coma. A day after Stephen entered the hospital, severely dehydrated and lethargic, he has received IV fluid rehydration and insulin and was waking up. He is able to sit up and converse briefly with his grandmother. With sufficient support and care, his grandmother hopes Stephen can be a normal boy and continue to do well in school.
Esther, Age 17
Esther is 17 but only in the fourth grade. She takes phenobarbital to control her epilepsy. But when the supply of phenobarbital at the hospital is exhausted, she suffers debilitating seizures. The seizures "grab" her. She collapses, and it can take her several days to recover—affecting her school attendance. Esther prays for relief from her seizures, saying she is determined to succeed academically. The principal of Esther's school speaks highly of her efforts. It is clear it won't take much support to help this determined girl who expresses high regard for the value of education.
